The Police Service Commission (PSC) has approved the promotion of Assistant Inspector General (AIG) Fayoade Mustapha to the rank of Deputy Inspector General of Police (DIG), the commission said in an official statement on Friday.
The promotion came as part of the PSC’s regular career advancement process for senior officers within the Nigeria Police Force.
The commission’s decision follows a structured assessment that included both a written examination and an oral interview.
The PSC is constitutionally mandated to oversee appointments and promotions in the police service, ensuring that eligible officers meet criteria for elevation to higher ranks.
The commission announced the promotion on Friday, February 20, 2026, after reviewing Mustapha’s performance in required assessments.
In a statement by the PSC’s spokesman, Torty Kalu, the commission confirmed that Mustapha’s results in the written examination and oral interview met the standards for advancement to the DIG rank.
The PSC Chairman, DIG Hashimu Argungu (retd.), addressed Mustapha following the promotion and emphasised the increased responsibility associated with the new rank, the commission said.
The elevation of AIG Fayoade Mustapha to DIG adds to the leadership cadre within the Nigeria Police Force.
Promotions at this level typically reflect the PSC’s assessment of an officer’s qualifications and readiness for expanded duties within national policing operations.
Appointment to the DIG rank places Mustapha among the most senior operational leaders in the force, tasked with supporting national security and policing responsibilities under the guidance of the Inspector‑General of Police.
