The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Edo Sector Command, has confirmed that it will not take part in Saturday’s Edo LG election, stating that it was not officially invited by the relevant election stakeholders.
The disclosure was made by the Edo State Sector Commander, Mr. Preye Bedford, during an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Benin on Friday.
According to Bedford, the command’s absence from the election exercise is solely because no formal invitation was extended to the agency to participate in the poll.
“My command is not involved. Well, we weren’t invited,” he stated.
The clarification comes ahead of the local government election across Edo State, where a 12-hour restriction on movement has been scheduled from 6:00 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. as part of security arrangements for the exercise.
When asked how the FRSC would manage its operations during the restriction period, Bedford explained that the corps would first evaluate the situation before determining whether any traffic management measures would be necessary.
He noted that the command’s routine operations would ordinarily be suspended during the movement restriction but said any further action would depend on developments on election day.
“We will only assess the situation before we know what to do,” he said.
The Edo State Independent Electoral Commission (EDSIEC) has cleared 12 political parties to participate in the Edo LG election, which will be conducted across the state’s 18 local government areas.
The exercise is expected to determine the leadership of the local councils, with security agencies and election officials putting measures in place to ensure a peaceful and orderly voting process.
