The All Progressives Congress (APC) has recorded a clean sweep in the Ebonyi State local government elections, winning all 13 chairmanship and 171 councillorship seats contested across the state. The results were announced by the Chairman of the Ebonyi State Independent Electoral Commission (EBSIEC), Patrick Enyi, at the commission’s office on Onwe Road, Abakaliki.
Among the newly elected chairmen is Osborn Umahi, son of the Minister of Works, Senator David Umahi, who secured the chairmanship of Ohaozara Local Government Area. Other candidates declared winners include Peace Agwu for Ishielu, Paul Ituma for Ohaukwu, Friday Nwuhuo for Ezza North and Chinedu Mkpuma for Ezza South.
The list also includes Chidi Nwode for Ikwo, Timothy Nwachi for Afikpo, Ikechukwu Ogbofia for Onicha and Michael Kalu Anyim for Ivo. Simeon Onuoha emerged in Edda, while Helen Aduga won Izzi. Chidiebere Alo was declared winner in Abakaliki, with Chibueze Odigwe emerging chairman-elect for Ebonyi Local Government Area.
Enyi described the exercise as peaceful, free and fair, noting that political parties other than the APC participated in the election.
He commended voters for coming out to exercise their constitutional rights and praised security agencies for maintaining order throughout the exercise. The commission chairman also acknowledged the support provided by security personnel during the conduct of the polls.
Speaking after his declaration, Osborn Umahi commended EBSIEC for what he described as the transparent and peaceful conduct of the election. The Ohaozara chairman-elect pledged to focus his administration on issues affecting residents at the grassroots.
He identified rural development, youth empowerment and agricultural transformation as key priorities of his proposed administration. Umahi said the programmes would be aimed at improving economic opportunities and enhancing living conditions across the local government.
The APC Chairman in Ebonyi State, Stanley Okoro Emegha, described the result as evidence of the party’s political dominance in the state. Emegha said the sweeping victory demonstrated what he called the growing acceptance of the APC among Ebonyi voters. He also linked the outcome to the party’s prospects ahead of the 2027 general elections.
According to him, the performance of the APC in the local government poll has strengthened the party’s confidence that it can secure another electoral victory in the state in 2027. The result gives the ruling party control of all 13 local government councils in Ebonyi, following an election EBSIEC said was conducted peacefully across the state.
