“Super Eagles Playing Best Football in 20 Years,” Says Former Captain Oliseh

Former Nigerian football captain Sunday Oliseh has lauded the current Super Eagles squad, describing them as the best Nigerian team in 20 years.

Speaking ahead of the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) 2025 semi-final against Morocco, Oliseh emphasised the team’s improved style of play, tactical discipline, and attacking prowess, noting that the squad offers hope for Nigerian fans seeking continental glory.

The Super Eagles have impressed at AFCON 2025 with strong performances in the group stages and knockout rounds. Nigeria’s previous squads have had mixed results in major tournaments, often exiting earlier than expected.

Analysts and football enthusiasts have increasingly praised the tactical evolution of the team under the current coaching staff, highlighting a blend of youth talent and experienced leadership as key drivers of success.

Oliseh, who captained the national team in the late 1990s and early 2000s, noted that Nigeria’s football strategy has evolved significantly. He highlighted improvements in ball control, defensive cohesion, and finishing, suggesting that the current squad possesses the attributes needed to challenge Africa’s top teams successfully.

In a video statement shared on social media, Oliseh said, “I’ve watched this team closely, and I can confidently say they are playing the best football Nigeria has seen in the past two decades. The players are disciplined, tactically aware, and versatile.”

He credited coach José Peseiro and his technical team for instilling consistency and balance in the squad’s approach.

The Super Eagles’ semi-final clash with Morocco is scheduled for January 15, 2026. Morocco, a continental powerhouse, will provide a stern test for Nigeria, which has not reached the AFCON final since 2013.

Oliseh stressed that while optimism is warranted, the team must maintain focus, avoid complacency, and execute strategies effectively to secure a place in the final.

Oliseh’s remarks have energized football fans across Nigeria, particularly in urban centres where football culture is deeply entrenched. The praise may also boost players’ confidence ahead of high-stakes matches and attract further media attention and sponsorship support for the national team.

For aspiring footballers, the current Super Eagles squad exemplifies the importance of discipline, skill development, and tactical understanding in achieving continental recognition.

Sunday Oliseh’s endorsement underscores the potential of Nigeria’s current Super Eagles squad to leave a lasting legacy at AFCON 2025.

As the semi-final against Morocco approaches, fans, coaches, and football stakeholders will be watching closely to see if Nigeria’s renewed tactical discipline and talent can convert promise into continental success.

The team’s performance may also shape discussions about the future of Nigerian football development and youth talent integration.
