FG Gives Contractor Seven‑Day Ultimatum to Fix Safety Concerns on Makurdi–Enugu Road

The Federal Government has given China Harbour Engineering Company (CHEC) and its sister firm, China Harbour Operation and Maintenance Company (CHOMC), a seven‑day ultimatum to address public safety and environmental concerns on the Makurdi–9th Mile–Enugu Road project, officials said following a high‑level meeting in Abuja.

The ultimatum was issued by Minister of Works, Engr. David Umahi, during a session involving contractors and concessionaires responsible for sections of the Mararaba–Keffi–Akwanga–Makurdi Dual Carriageway.

The directive aims to ensure that outstanding safety issues raised by residents and stakeholders are resolved promptly.

A statement from the Ministry of Works, signed by Director of Information and Public Relations, Mohammed Ahmed, said the meeting reviewed several public complaints about the road project and emphasised contractor accountability.

The concerns include excessive dust emissions from construction activities on the Makurdi–Enugu stretch, which officials said pose environmental and health risks to residents along the corridor.

In response, Umahi directed the Permanent Secretary of the ministry to issue a formal letter mandating that the construction companies immediately implement dust‑control measures, including soil stabilisation techniques, to protect public health and reduce environmental impact.

The minister warned that failure to address the identified issues within seven days could lead to the suspension of the project contract. The stance reflects the government’s emphasis on proactive enforcement of safety and quality standards in federal road projects.

The directive on the Makurdi–Enugu road is part of broader federal oversight efforts on strategic road infrastructure under the Renewed Hope Agenda.

Authorities have increasingly emphasised contractor accountability and compliance with safety and environmental requirements on major federal highway projects across the country.
