Amnesty International Condemns Unlawful Arrest of Man Over Online Criticism

Amnesty International has condemned the recent arrest of a Nigerian man for allegedly criticizing government officials online, describing the action as a violation of fundamental human rights. The organization emphasized that freedom of expression is protected under both Nigerian law and international human rights conventions.

In a statement released on Tuesday, Amnesty International stated, “The arrest of this individual for expressing opinions online is unlawful and unacceptable. Authorities must respect the right to freedom of expression and ensure that citizens can voice concerns without fear of reprisal.”

The man, whose identity has been withheld for security reasons, was reportedly taken into custody following posts on social media that were critical of certain governmental policies. Civil society groups have raised alarms, calling the arrest a dangerous precedent that could suppress public discourse and civic engagement.

Legal analysts note that such arrests could undermine Nigeria’s democratic principles, particularly regarding online expression. Amnesty International further urged the Nigerian authorities to release the detainee immediately and to review policies that criminalize lawful speech in digital spaces.

Human rights advocates argue that the incident highlights the growing tension between digital freedoms and state control. The organization emphasized the importance of protecting online spaces as arenas for dialogue, accountability, and civic participation.

Amnesty International called on both state and federal authorities to uphold constitutional guarantees and to ensure that citizens’ rights are not curtailed under the guise of security or public order. The case has drawn international attention, reinforcing the need for clear, fair, and rights-respecting legal frameworks for online expression in Nigeria.
