The Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) says former Kaduna State Governor Nasir El‑Rufai is currently in its custody as part of ongoing investigations connected to alleged financial dealings during his tenure from 2015 to 2023.
Mr El‑Rufai had earlier appeared before the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) in Abuja following an invitation tied to inquiries into financial transactions and projects linked to his administration.
The matter has been described in media reports as relating to alleged financial dealings potentially involving N432 billion during his time as governor, although the anti‑graft agencies have not publicly released formal charges or detailed evidence.
In a statement issued and signed by J. Okor Odey, Head of Media and Public Communications for the ICPC, the commission confirmed that Mr El‑Rufai “is in the custody of the Commission in connection with investigations.”
The ICPC statement did not disclose specifics of the investigation or the duration of Mr El‑Rufai’s detention.
Prior reporting noted that the EFCC had questioned Mr El‑Rufai as part of what sources described as a broader anti‑corruption review.
Mr El‑Rufai’s transfer from the EFCC to the ICPC underscores the involvement of multiple anti‑graft bodies in reviewing financial conduct tied to his governance period.
These developments are part of broader enforcement actions by statutory agencies tasked with investigating corruption and related offences in Nigeria.
For legal practitioners and policy observers, the confirmed custody status highlights the role of institutional mandates in corruption investigations and the procedural steps taken by authorities in pursuing alleged breaches of financial regulations.
