Four Dead, Nine Injured in Multiple‑Vehicle Crash in Anambra State

Four women died and nine other people were injured in a multiple‑vehicle road crash on Friday evening at the Agulu Lake section of the Nanka‑Agulu road in Anaocha Local Government Area of Anambra State, the Federal Road Safety Corps has confirmed.

Road traffic crashes remain a leading cause of fatalities and injuries in Nigeria, with the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) reporting multiple deadly incidents across Anambra State in recent years.

The state’s rugged terrain and narrow road bridges have been sites of past accidents. The FRSC routinely issues statements following crashes to provide official details on causes and casualties.

The Nanka‑Agulu road is a key connector within the state, and the latest crash occurred along a stretch known locally for its narrow bridge and challenging descent, contributing to traffic incidents.

The FRSC Sector Public Education Officer in Anambra State, Margaret Onabe, confirmed in a press statement that the crash took place at about 6:18 pm on Friday along the Agulu Lake, Nanka‑Agulu stretch of the Awka‑Ekwulobia Road.

According to the commission’s statement, four women were killed and nine other individuals sustained various degrees of injuries in the collision involving four vehicles: a Toyota Hiace bus (registration HAL676YG), a trailer, a shuttle vehicle (registration UKP274YA), and a Toyota Hilux.

Witnesses near the scene reported that the victims appeared to be returning from a burial ceremony when the vehicle conveying them lost control on the descent toward the narrow bridge and became involved in the crash.

The FRSC attributed the probable cause of the crash to speed and loss of control, as stated in the official press release.

Community members provided initial emergency response assistance before officials arrived at the site, according to accounts shared with journalists.

The fatal crash adds to a pattern of road traffic casualties in Anambra State, reflecting broader concerns about road safety and driving conditions in the region.

Crashes involving multiple vehicles can strain emergency response and healthcare resources, given the number of injured victims requiring attention.

For the affected families and communities, the loss of life and injuries impose immediate emotional and economic burdens. Emergency responders and neighbouring residents often provide initial aid before official rescue teams arrive.

The incident highlights ongoing challenges on narrow road corridors and bridges where loss of vehicle control can have severe consequences
