Golden Jubilee Spotlight: Uzodimma Honors Past Leaders Amid Udenwa, Okorocha Absence

Former Imo State governors Chief Achike Udenwa and Owelle Rochas Okorocha did not attend the final ceremony of the state’s 50th anniversary celebrations in Owerri while Governor Hope Uzodimma presented honours to past leaders and highlighted development milestones.

Imo State marked its Golden Jubilee with a series of events recognising five decades since its creation in 1976. These activities included academic, cultural, and spiritual engagements leading up to a final celebration in Owerri.

Government honours were awarded to former leaders and distinguished contributors to the state’s growth as part of the official commemoration of the anniversary.

The Golden Jubilee reflects Imo’s historical evolution, from its first civilian governor, Chief Samuel Mbakwe, through successive administrations. The honours scheme was designed to acknowledge enduring contributions to governance, culture, and development.

At the climax event on Saturday, several former governors were present, including General Ike Nwachukwu (rtd), Chief Ikedi Ohakim, and Rt. Hon. Emeka Ihedioha, each receiving the Grand Service Star of Imo State Award.

Honours were officially conferred on Udenwa and Okorocha, although both were not physically present at the ceremony. Chief Samuel Mbakwe was represented by his son as a posthumous recipient of the Golden Star Governor of Imo Award.

Vice President Kashim Shettima, representing President Bola Tinubu, praised Imo’s achievements over 50 years and noted the state’s contributions to creative industries, education, and entrepreneurship. He also made a public remark about Emeka Ihedioha’s potential political alignment.

Governor Uzodimma highlighted infrastructure growth and social development, noting that over 130 roads were constructed under his administration. He said the state now has four universities approved by the National Universities Commission and operates a comprehensive health insurance scheme.

He also cited youth training efforts in technology and the commissioning of the Orashi Electricity Project as steps toward reliable power delivery.

The absence of former governors at a major state event may signal ongoing divergences within Imo’s political landscape, especially among high-profile leaders.

Their nonattendance could affect perceptions of political unity in the state, an important factor in fostering a collaborative environment for business and development stakeholders.

Uzodimma’s emphasis on infrastructure, education, and youth skills development during the ceremony underscores government priorities for economic transformation. Progress in these areas may enhance investor confidence and support entrepreneurial growth within Imo’s urban economy.

Recognition of past administrations and the articulation of development outcomes provide a platform for dialogue on governance continuity and future policy actions that matter to residents, businesses, and civil society.
