House of Reps Member Asks Acting IGP to Probe Attack on Obi’s Convoy

A House of Representatives member has written to the Acting Inspector‑General of Police, Tunji Disu, asking that the Nigeria Police formally investigate the attack on the convoy of presidential candidate Peter Obi during a campaign rally in Kano State, the lawmaker said in a statement on Tuesday.

The request for investigation follows the reported incident at a 2027 presidential campaign rally in Kano State, where Mr Obi’s convoy was said to have come under attack while he was on the campaign trail.

The letter to the acting IGP emphasises the need for law enforcement to determine the circumstances of the attack and ensure accountability.

Campaign activities by Mr Obi, the Labour Party (LP) presidential candidate, have taken place across several states in the run‑up to the February 20, 2027 general elections.

During such events, security arrangements are provided by the Nigeria Police Force and other relevant agencies to protect participants and the general public.

In a letter delivered to the office of the acting IGP on Monday, the lawmaker said the alleged assault on security personnel escorting Mr Obi’s convoy and disruption of the rally warranted formal investigation.

The lawmaker requested that the police identify the perpetrators and take appropriate legal action based on findings.

The letter also called for police authorities to provide a public update on the status of the investigation once commenced. It noted the importance of full transparency on policing actions surrounding the Kano campaign event.

Mr Obi’s campaign team previously issued a statement about the incident, expressing concern about the safety of its supporters and activities during the Kano rally.

The team said it expected security agencies to ensure protection for citizens participating in political events and to investigate any breaches of public order.

The Acting IGP, Tunji Disu, had been decorated into the role following the resignation of his predecessor, Kayode Egbetokun.

Police leadership is responsible for maintaining law and order during election periods, including security for political rallies, as outlined under the Police Act and related regulations.

The call for an official police investigation highlight concerns about security at political events ahead of the 2027 general elections.

A formal probe may lead to identification of those responsible for the reported attack and help clarify security arrangements for future events.

A transparent inquiry process may also contribute to broader public confidence in law enforcement responsiveness to breaches of public order during campaigns.
