INEC Declares APC’s Joshua Ishaku Winner of Bwari Area Council Chairmanship Election

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has declared Mr. Joshua Ishaku of the All Progressives Congress (APC) winner of the Bwari Area Council chairmanship election held on February 21, 2026.

The Bwari Area Council election was conducted as part of the 2026 Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Area Council polls organised by INEC.

The election took place across 10 wards in the council, including Igu, Shere, Dutse, Ushafa, Byazhin, Kuduru, Kubwa, Usuma, Bwari Central and Kawu.

Area Council chairmanship elections determine the leadership of local government administration in the Federal Capital Territory.

These polls were held concurrently across the six area councils of the FCT as part of a broader local governance election exercise.

The Returning Officer for the Bwari Area Council election, Prof. Mohammed Nurudeen, announced the results in Bwari town on Sunday, February 22, 2026.

He said Mr. Ishaku “having satisfied the requirements of the law, is hereby declared the winner and is returned elected.”

According to the official result, Joshua Ishaku secured 18,466 votes in the chairmanship contest.

The candidate of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) finished second with 4,254 votes, while the Zenith Labour Party (ZLP) candidate placed third with 3,515 votes.

The return of the elected chairman follows the collation of results from all registered wards in Bwari, as monitored and announced by the commission’s designated returning officer.

The declaration of Mr. Ishaku as Bwari Area Council chairman adds to the list of confirmed results from the FCT Area Council elections, where other councils such as Abuja Municipal Area Council (AMAC) and Gwagwalada have also concluded and declared their winners.

Winning an Area Council chairmanship provides the elected candidate with administrative authority to lead local development, oversee council functions and implement policies designed to improve community services in the council area.

The Bwari chairmanship result is part of a wider electoral process that shapes grassroots governance in the Federal Capital Territory.
