The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has sought approximately ₦950 billion to conduct the 2027 general elections, the commission said in a budget submission to the National Assembly.
INEC presented its budget estimate for the election year during a joint session of the Senate and House of Representatives Committees on Electoral Matters in Abuja on Wednesday. The commission’s request covers various aspects of organising the polls.
The commission said the ₦950 billion estimate includes provisions for:
- Election logistics and materials, including ballot papers and equipment.
- Personnel costs for staff and ad hoc officials deployed for polling and collation.
- Training and voter education programmes.
- Deployment of technology and security support during the election cycle.
The request was outlined in the INEC 2027 Appropriation Estimates presented to lawmakers.
At the presentation, INEC officials said the proposed budget is based on assessments of projected costs associated with key electoral activities.
They said the commission compiled the figures in line with the Electoral Act and related procedures for election planning.
INEC also provided lawmakers with details on planned collation centres, polling units, ad hoc staff deployment and logistics arrangements, as part of the budget justification.
Members of the National Assembly committees said they will review the estimates and engage with relevant stakeholders before recommending the budget figures for inclusion in the 2026 Appropriation Bill.
The process requires that the estimates be scrutinised before lawmakers finalise the federal budget canvassed for the 2027 election year.
