Kidnapped ECWA BOT Chairman Regains Freedom Amid Security Concerns in Jos

The kidnapped ECWA BOT chairman regains freedom after days in captivity, the Evangelical Church Winning All (ECWA) confirmed, when Rev. Prof. Sunday Bobai Agang was released by his abductors and is now reported to be safe.

The safe release follows his abduction from his residence in Jos North Local Government Area of Plateau State earlier this week.

Kidnapping incidents have been reported in various parts of Nigeria, affecting individuals, families, and communities amid broader concerns over insecurity and criminality.

Plateau State, where Rev. Prof. Agang was abducted has experienced multiple security challenges, including armed attacks and abductions in recent years.

The kidnapped ECWA BOT chairman regains freedom announcement comes at a time when civil society and religious organisations have repeatedly called for improved protection of citizens, especially clergy and community leaders.

Rev. Prof. Sunday Bobai Agang, a prominent pastor and Chairman of the ECWA Board of Trustees (BoT), was abducted from his residence in Farin Gada, Jos North Local Government Area of Plateau State on Tuesday morning, the church said.

In a statement confirming his release, ECWA Acting Public Relations Officer Danjuma Auta said: “We wish to announce with immense gratitude and joy the release of our dear pastor, Rev. Prof. Sunday Bobai Agang, who was abducted by unknown gunmen.”

Auta said Rev. Agang “has regained his freedom and is currently safe”, adding that the ECWA family and global Church of Christ offered prayers throughout the ordeal.

The statement described the safe return as a testament to faith and collective prayer, and appreciated all persons who prayed for his safety during the period of detention.

While rejoicing at his release, ECWA noted the concerning rise in kidnapping incidents, emphasising that the “rising wave of kidnapping, which has sadly become a means of livelihood for some,” poses a threat to national stability.

The church urged government at all levels to fulfil its constitutional responsibility of protecting lives and properties, advocating for “decisive and sustained actions” to dismantle criminal networks responsible for such acts.

The kidnapped ECWA BOT chairman regains freedom development highlights insecurity concerns in Nigeria and the risks faced by community leaders.

Kidnapping of high-profile individuals, including religious figures, often draws public attention to national security issues.

For community leaders and civil society groups, the release underscores the importance of collaborative efforts between citizens and security agencies to improve safety and response mechanisms.

Rev. Agang’s release without reported harm may also reflect effective interventions, though details on negotiation or security response were not specified.

The incident may prompt policymakers and security stakeholders to re-evaluate strategies to protect vulnerable populations and disrupt criminal networks operating in Plateau State and beyond.
