Obasanjo Praises Ogun Monarch Oba Sodeinde on His 100th Birthday

Former President Olusegun Obasanjo on Saturday praised the Olu of Iju, Gbalefa in Ado‑Odo/Ota Local Government Area of Ogun State, Oba Olufemi Sodeinde, on his 100th birthday, describing him as a selfless leader with a lasting impact on his community.

Traditional rulers in Nigeria play ceremonial and cultural roles in their communities, often recognised for promoting unity and development.

Oba Olufemi Sodeinde, the Olu of Iju, Gbalefa, reached the milestone of 100 years, an age seldom attained and celebrated among monarchs in the region.

The birthday celebration was held at the Olusegun Obasanjo Presidential Library in Abeokuta, Ogun State.

Obasanjo’s relationship with Oba Sodeinde spans decades, including service together in the 1960s when Obasanjo was army commander in Ibadan. The event marked the monarch’s centenary life and service to his community.

Addressing guests at the celebration, Obasanjo expressed gratitude to God for granting the monarch longevity and the opportunity to positively influence his people.

He highlighted Oba Sodeinde’s firm stand for the people of the Owu Kingdom and Gbalefa community.

Obasanjo recalled his long‑standing relationship with Oba Sodeinde, which began in 1967 when he was the Third Area Commander of the Nigerian Army in Ibadan.

The former president said the monarch’s leadership and dedication to his people were exemplary.

In a screened documentary honouring Oba Sodeinde, Obasanjo said the monarch stood firmly for the people of Owu and remained qualified to lead despite his advanced age at installation.

Mrs. Bola Obasanjo, wife of the former president, also spoke at the event, describing Oba Sodeinde as a unifier and bridge‑builder who embraced all people irrespective of background.

She noted his commitment to impacting lives and fostering unity.

The monarch’s first child, Mojisola Sodeinde, spoke about her father’s leadership qualities, noting his discipline, compassion, and belief in unity, peace, and harmony.

She described these values as central to his approach in both public and private life.

Other dignitaries at the event included representatives of former Ogun State governor Ibikunle Amosun, Egba High Chief Chief Doja Adewolu, and former Ogun State House of Assembly member Hon. Johnson Fatoki.

The centenary celebration of Oba Sodeinde highlights recognition of traditional leadership within Ogun State and reflects respect for longevity in service among community leaders.

By publicly celebrating the monarch, Obasanjo reinforces the cultural significance of traditional institutions in fostering unity and cohesion.

For families and communities, such events affirm the role of elders and traditional rulers in preserving heritage and values.

The presence of national figures like Obasanjo and other dignitaries underscores the mutual respect between political leaders and cultural institutions.
