Police Disburse N2.4bn to 1,075 Families of Fallen Officers

The Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Disu, has disbursed over ₦2.4 billion to families and next-of-kin of deceased police officers under welfare and insurance schemes.

The presentation took place at the Force Headquarters in Abuja.

The disbursement forms part of the Nigeria Police Force’s welfare initiatives aimed at supporting families of officers who died in active service.

The scheme operates under the Group Life Assurance and IGP Family Welfare Schemes, which provide financial benefits to beneficiaries.

Police authorities have in recent years faced concerns over delays in insurance claims and welfare payments.

Efforts to address these issues have included recovery of outstanding obligations and improved administrative processes.

According to the police, the total sum disbursed amounts to ₦2,435,421,584.11, covering multiple policy years, including 2018/2019, 2020/2021, 2021/2022, 2022/2023, 2024/2025 and 2025/2026.

A total of 1,075 beneficiaries received the cheques as part of the exercise.

The Force Public Relations Officer, DCP Anthony Placid, confirmed that the payments also include outstanding insurance claims recovered from previous years.

Speaking at the event, Force Insurance Officer ACP Lydia Ameh said the disbursement reflects the commitment of the police leadership to prioritise the welfare of officers and their families.

She added that the payments represent recoveries from long-standing insurance obligations.

In his remarks, Disu described the event as a recognition of the sacrifices made by officers who died in the line of duty.

He stated that the gesture demonstrates the police force’s responsibility to support families of fallen personnel.

The IGP also said efforts would be intensified to improve administrative processes and reduce delays in the payment of benefits.

The disbursement provides financial support to families of deceased officers and addresses part of the backlog of insurance claims.

Welfare payments to beneficiaries are a key component of personnel support systems within security agencies.

Improved claims processing and timely disbursement may contribute to morale within the police force, particularly among serving officers concerned about post-service or family welfare.
