President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has approved the deployment of 65 ambassadors to various countries and international missions, months after their nominations were confirmed by the Nigerian Senate in December.
Among the notable appointments, former presidential aide Reno Omokri has been posted to Mexico, while former aviation minister Femi Fani-Kayode will represent Nigeria in Germany.
Other prominent assignments include former Rivers State military administrator Ibok-Ete Ekwe Ibas, who was posted to the Philippines; former Abia State governor Okezie Ikpeazu, assigned to Spain; and former Enugu State governor Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi, who will serve in Greece.
Former Minister of Interior Abdulrahman Dambazau has been posted to China, while Nkechi Linda Ufochukwu will represent Nigeria in Israel.
Paul Oga Adikwu was assigned to the Vatican City, and businessman and politician Jimoh Ibrahim will serve as Nigeria’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations.
According to a statement from the presidency, the postings include 34 non-career ambassadors and 31 career ambassadors assigned to diplomatic missions across different regions of the world.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs (Nigeria) has already received the required diplomatic consent (agrément) from some countries for their assigned envoys.
For instance, the United Kingdom approved the appointment of Aminu Dalhatu as High Commissioner, while France granted consent for Ayo Oke to serve as ambassador.
The ministry has also forwarded the nominations of the other envoys to their respective host countries to obtain the necessary diplomatic approval in line with international diplomatic procedures.
President Tinubu further directed the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to begin the induction programme for the ambassadors-designate and high commissioners.
The appointments cover diplomatic missions across Africa, Europe, Asia, and the Americas, as well as Nigeria’s representation at the United Nations.
