Tinubu Nominates Oyedele as Minister of State for Finance

President Bola Tinubu on Tuesday nominated Mr Taiwo Oyedele as the Minister of State for Finance, replacing Dr Doris Uzoka-Anite, and formally conveyed his nomination to the Senate for confirmation.

The Minister of State for Finance assists the finance ministry in managing the nation’s fiscal policy, budgeting processes and revenue administration.

The role is distinct from that of the substantive Minister of Finance but forms part of the federal cabinet responsible for economic and financial governance.

Nigeria’s federal executive requires Senate confirmation for ministerial appointments.

Dr Doris Uzoka-Anite served as the Minister of State for Finance before the nomination and will be reassigned to the Federal Ministry of Budget and National Planning as the Minister of State.

Her reassignment marks her third ministerial portfolio under the current administration.

In a statement quoted by multiple Nigerian media outlets, President Tinubu’s Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, confirmed that the president has sent Oyedele’s nomination letter to the President of the Senate, Godswill Akpabio, for Senate screening and confirmation.

Mr Taiwo Oyedele, 50, is an economist, chartered accountant and public policy expert from Ikaram, Akoko in Ondo State.

Before his nomination, he chaired the Presidential Committee on Fiscal Policy and Tax Reforms, a government body tasked with overhauling Nigeria’s tax system.

Oyedele holds a Higher National Diploma (HND) in Accountancy and Finance from Yaba College of Technology and a Bachelor of Science degree in Applied Accounting from Oxford Brookes University.

He also completed executive education programmes at the London School of Economics, Yale University, the Gordon Institute of Business Science, and the Harvard Kennedy School.

He spent 22 years of his professional career at PricewaterhouseCoopers (PwC), where he rose to become Fiscal Policy Partner and Africa Tax Leader.

Oyedele also serves as a professor at Babcock University in Ogun State and a visiting scholar at the Lagos Business School.

The nomination of Taiwo Oyedele follows ongoing reforms in Nigeria’s fiscal and tax policy landscape, reflecting presidential focus on strengthening revenue systems and fiscal administration.

The Minister of State for Finance supports leadership in the ministry on economic and budgetary oversight, particularly in areas of tax reform and revenue mobilisation.

Dr Doris Uzoka-Anite’s redeployment to the Ministry of Budget and National Planning shifts her responsibilities to another key economic portfolio within the federal cabinet, where budgeting and planning coordination are central.

The Senate’s confirmation process will determine Oyedele’s official assumption of the ministerial role, a constitutionally mandated step for all federal executive appointments.
