The Wike says PDP taken back declaration has set the tone for renewed internal positioning within the Peoples Democratic Party, as Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, told defectors that loyal members have reclaimed control of the party.
He urged aggrieved members to return and support efforts to rebuild unity ahead of the 2027 elections.
The Peoples Democratic Party has experienced months of internal disputes, with factions emerging over leadership and direction.
These divisions led to parallel alignments and heightened uncertainty about the party’s cohesion.
The Wike says PDP taken back statement was delivered during the party’s 10th Elective National Convention in Abuja, an event positioned by party leaders as a turning point to restore structure and direction.
Political conventions play a key role in Nigeria’s party system, serving as platforms for leadership decisions and strategic realignment.
The Abuja gathering attracted stakeholders seeking to reposition the party ahead of future electoral contests.
Addressing party members, Wike declared that the PDP had been reclaimed by loyal members who remained committed during its internal crisis.
He described the convention as evidence that the party had regained institutional footing.
“Today marks the rebirth of our party in a new form… a united party, ready to move forward,” he said.
Wike criticised defectors, stating that leadership requires resilience during periods of crisis. “When crises arise, true leaders stand and resolve them; they do not run away,” he added.
He further stated that the party had been “reclaimed and returned… to the people,” reinforcing his position that control had shifted back to committed members.
Despite the criticism, Wike extended an invitation to those who left the party, urging them to return under conditions of unity and discipline.
In a related address, Acting National Chairman Abdulrahman Mohammed emphasised that personal ambition should not override party stability.
“No ambition is greater than this party,” he said while calling for collective commitment to rebuilding the PDP.
Former Jigawa State Governor Sule Lamido also appealed to defectors to return, describing the PDP as a political platform with deep national roots and historical significance.
The Wike says PDP taken back position signals an attempt by a dominant faction within the party to assert control and reshape internal narratives.
For party members, this may influence alignment decisions, especially as preparations for 2027 elections begin.
For Nigeria’s political environment, the development highlights ongoing realignments within major parties. Internal cohesion remains a critical factor in determining electoral competitiveness and public perception.
In urban political and business contexts, stability within major parties often shapes policy continuity, governance expectations, and investor sentiment.
