Protest Alert: U.S. Embassy Moves Abuja Visa Appointments to March 9

The United States Embassy in Abuja has rescheduled visa appointments and suspended routine services until Monday, March 9, 2026, citing the possibility of protests in Nigeria’s capital city.

In a notice issued through its official communication channels, the U.S. Mission in Nigeria stated that the decision was taken as a precautionary measure because of the potential for demonstrations in Abuja.

Embassies often adjust operations during periods of security concern to protect staff, visitors and citizens seeking consular services.

The announcement affects visa applicants and individuals scheduled for other embassy services in the Federal Capital Territory.

According to the notice, routine embassy services will remain suspended until March 9, 2026.

Visa appointments previously scheduled for March 4 and March 5 have been moved to new dates in the following week.

Similarly, American Citizen Services (ACS) appointments planned for March 5 have also been rescheduled.

The embassy advised affected visa applicants to check their email inbox or their AVITS accounts for updated appointment dates.

Applicants seeking American Citizen Services were also instructed to review their email notifications for their new appointment schedules.

For applicants who do not receive updated appointment information, the embassy directed them to contact the consular section through the Visa Navigator platform for assistance.

The temporary suspension affects Nigerians who had planned to attend visa interviews or consular appointments in Abuja during the affected dates.

Travel applicants and U.S. citizens requiring services from the embassy may experience scheduling adjustments while operations remain suspended.

The embassy also urged the public to continue monitoring its official website and social media platforms for additional updates regarding embassy services.
