The Nigeria Democratic Congress, NDC, has condemned the alleged attack on its members during a grassroots meeting in Obuoffia Ward, Nkanu West Local Government Area of Enugu State.
The party described the reported NDC attack in Enugu as unprovoked, alleging that suspected state-sponsored thugs were behind the incident.
In a statement issued late Sunday, NDC National Publicity Secretary Osa Director said the party had a constitutional right to participate in the democratic process through peaceful assembly.
Director said the alleged NDC attack in Enugu was part of what the party described as an increasing pattern of assaults against its members.
“This incessant assault on our members by state-sponsored thugs must stop,” the statement said.
The party maintained that its registration as a political party entitled it to organise meetings and mobilise supporters without intimidation.
It also alleged that attacks against its members in Enugu and other parts of the South-East amounted to an assault on democracy and freedom of association.
The NDC further accused security agencies of failing to respond adequately to attacks allegedly targeting opposition groups in the region.
The party also cited an earlier incident in Imo State involving its members.
According to the NDC, its members were allegedly attacked on two occasions during a town hall meeting and consultation organised by its senatorial candidate, Uche Onyeagocha.
The party also alleged that the All Progressives Congress, APC, in Enugu was unsettled by what it described as the growing momentum of the opposition.
However, the NDC said the reported NDC attack in Enugu would not prevent it from mobilising supporters ahead of the 2027 general elections.
“If the goal of those sponsoring these thugs and attacks is to instill fear in the hearts of the people, they have failed woefully,” the party said.
The NDC called on security agencies to conduct a thorough investigation into the incident.
It also urged authorities to identify and prosecute those responsible, including anyone found to have sponsored the alleged attacks.
The party said it would continue organising meetings, mobilising supporters and participating in the democratic process despite the reported incidents.
“The NDC will not be cowed. We will continue to organise, mobilise, and defend the democratic space,” it said.
