Former Minister of Innovation, Science and Technology, Uche Geoffrey Nnaji, has been honoured with the Women Empowerment Champion of the Year Award in recognition of his contributions to the development and welfare of women in Nigeria.
The recognition was presented during the Her Excellence Awards 2026 held in Abuja.
The Her Excellence Awards is an annual event that celebrates individuals and organisations contributing to women’s advancement and leadership.
The 2026 edition also recognised 50 outstanding women who have demonstrated excellence in different sectors of society.
Gender inclusion and women’s empowerment have remained key themes in Nigeria’s development discussions.
Public and private sector initiatives often focus on improving access to education, economic opportunities and leadership roles for women.
Awards and recognitions that highlight contributions to women’s empowerment are frequently organised to encourage broader participation in programmes that support gender equality and community development.
At the event in Abuja, Uche Geoffrey Nnaji was represented by Basil Ani, who spoke on his behalf during the ceremony.
In his remarks, the former minister commended women for their contributions to families and society. He described women as key pillars of support throughout his public service career.
“I am deeply honoured by this recognition. It is a reminder that empowering women is not just a policy objective but a moral and social responsibility that strengthens families, communities and the nation,” he said.
He also encouraged women to continue advocating policies and initiatives that support their welfare and inclusion in national development.
The former minister stated that he would remain committed to contributing to discussions that promote greater participation of women in society.
The event attracted several dignitaries and leaders from civil society, business and advocacy organisations who gathered to recognise achievements in women’s empowerment and leadership.
Recognition of individuals who support women’s empowerment can strengthen advocacy for gender inclusion and encourage broader participation in development initiatives.
In Nigeria’s urban and economic environment, programmes that support women’s education, entrepreneurship and leadership are often viewed as important for expanding economic opportunities and improving community welfare.
Public recognition of such contributions also helps highlight ongoing efforts to promote women’s participation in governance, business and social development initiatives.
