Osun Lawmaker Withdraws Resignation, Reaffirms Support for Adeleke’s Second Term Bid

A lawmaker representing Iwo State Constituency in the Osun State House of Assembly has withdrawn his earlier resignation letter from the Accord Party (AP) and reaffirmed his loyalty to Governor Ademola Adeleke’s bid for re‑election in the 2026 Osun gubernatorial election, according to party and legislative sources on Tuesday.

The political developments come amid preparations for the August 15, 2026, governorship election in Osun State. Governor Ademola Adeleke, who defected from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the Accord Party in 2025, is seeking a second term on the platform of the Accord Party.

The Accord Party is among the several political parties in Nigeria participating in state and national elections.

Steps by party members to change affiliation or withdraw from political platforms occasionally draw public attention during critical pre‑election periods.

The lawmaker, Adesina Atanda Rabiu, who also serves as Chairman of the House Committee on Home Affairs, Culture and Tourism, initially submitted a resignation letter to the Speaker of the Osun State House of Assembly, Adewale Egbedun. In the letter, Rabiu stated that his resignation from the Accord Party was “personal” and that he preferred to keep the reasons for his resignation private.

In the letter, Rabiu wrote: “I hereby tender my resignation letter from the Accord Party, effective immediately. This decision is personal, and I’d like to keep the reason to myself.”

However, Rabiu later clarified his position in a video that went viral, confirming the authenticity of the resignation letter but stating that he had decided to withdraw it.

Speaking in the video, Rabiu said he remains a member of the Accord Party and reiterated his support for Governor Adeleke’s second‑term ambition.

“My name is Adesina Atanda Rabiu, who is representing Iwo State Constituency in the Osun State House of Assembly…

With what is happening in the last two hours that I wrote a letter resigning from the Accord Party, I am now saying it at this hour that I have withdrawn the letter,” Rabiu said in the video.

He added that he is “still in the Accord Party and behind Governor Ademola Adeleke,” and expressed his intention to work toward Adeleke’s victory in the upcoming election.

The reversal by Rabiu comes at a time when political alliances and party cohesion are critical ahead of the 2026 governorship contest in Osun State.

Public adjustments in party membership by lawmakers can influence party strength and public perception in highly competitive elections.

For the Accord Party, which is positioning Governor Adeleke for re‑election, the reaffirmation of loyalty by a sitting lawmaker may be viewed as a positive signal of internal unity.
