Allowance for Ogun workers expands as Abiodun approves weekly day off

Allowance for Ogun workers has been introduced alongside a new policy approving a weekly day off for civil servants in the state. Governor Dapo Abiodun announced the measures as part of efforts to reduce commuting stress and rising living costs. The initiative will begin in April 2026 and run for an initial three-month period. It reflects targeted intervention aimed at supporting public sector employees.

Allowance for Ogun workers comes amid increasing economic pressure driven by higher fuel prices and transportation costs. Public servants across Nigeria have experienced reduced purchasing power due to inflation and cost-of-living adjustments.

State governments have responded with temporary support measures designed to ease financial strain. These policies often include transport subsidies and flexible work arrangements to maintain workforce stability.

In Ogun State, the introduction of structured support reflects a growing trend among subnational governments. Allowance for Ogun workers aligns with broader efforts to sustain productivity while addressing economic realities affecting civil servants.

Allowance for Ogun workers includes a ₦10,000 monthly transport support for eligible civil servants. The payment is designed to reduce the financial burden of daily commuting across the state.

In addition, the government approved one day off duty per week for workers. This measure is expected to reduce transport frequency and improve work-life balance. According to the Head of Service, Kehinde Onasanya, the policy aims to “alleviate commuting challenges” and enhance productivity within the public service.

However, the weekly day-off arrangement excludes essential service providers. These include medical personnel, teachers, judicial officers, and security staff whose duties require consistent presence.

Despite the exemption, allowance for Ogun workers applies to all categories, ensuring that financial support reaches a wider workforce base.

Implementation will be managed by Ministries, Departments, and Agencies. Accounting officers are responsible for scheduling days off without disrupting service delivery.

Allowance for Ogun workers is expected to improve financial stability for public servants facing rising expenses. Direct support can help offset transport costs and preserve disposable income.
