The Sultan of Sokoto and President-General of the Nigerian Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs (NSCIA), Muhammad Sa’ad Abubakar III, has officially declared Thursday, July 16, 2026, as the first day of Safar 1448AH following the non-sighting of the new crescent moon across Nigeria. The announcement was conveyed in a statement issued from the Sultan’s Palace in Sokoto by the Chairman of the Sultanate Council Advisory Committee on Religious Affairs, Sambo Wali Junaidu.
According to the statement, the Sultanate Council, working alongside the National Moon Sighting Committee, reviewed reports received from different parts of the country after sunset on Tuesday, July 14, 2026. However, no authenticated report confirming the sighting of the Safar crescent was received.
In line with established Islamic jurisprudence governing the lunar calendar, the absence of a verified moon sighting means Muharram 1448AH will complete its full 30-day cycle. As a result, Wednesday, July 15, 2026, will be observed as the final day of Muharram, while Thursday, July 16, 2026, marks the official commencement of Safar 1448AH, the second month of the Islamic calendar.
The Sultanate Council explained that determining the beginning and end of Islamic months continues to rely on verified crescent sightings conducted in accordance with Islamic principles. Religious scholars noted that the process reflects the importance of consultation, accuracy and adherence to established Islamic guidelines before official declarations are made.
As the spiritual leader of Nigerian Muslims, the Sultan’s pronouncements serve as the recognised guide for Islamic institutions, mosques and Muslim communities nationwide in determining important dates on the Hijri calendar.
The Sultanate Council reaffirmed its commitment to maintaining transparency throughout the moon-sighting exercise, stressing that only credible and authenticated reports are accepted before any official announcement is made. The council also commended members of the National Moon Sighting Committee and volunteers across Nigeria who participated in monitoring the crescent.
With the commencement of Safar 1448AH, Muslims across the country are encouraged to continue their religious obligations and spiritual activities in line with Islamic teachings. The Sultan also offered prayers for lasting peace, national stability and progress, urging Nigerians to uphold harmony, strengthen their faith and contribute positively to the nation’s development.
