The Nigeria Democratic Congress, NDC, has condemned the reported obstruction of Peter Obi’s planned visit to Yelwata community in Benue State.
The party alleged that suspected thugs blocked the convoy of its presidential candidate on Tuesday.
According to the NDC, the incident prevented Obi from reaching the community to visit families affected by recent killings.
In a statement issued by its National Publicity Secretary, Osa Director, the NDC alleged that the group was led by an aide to Benue State Governor Hyacinth Alia.
The party described the incident as troubling, saying Obi had travelled to Yelwata to mourn with families affected by the violence.
It said the visit was also intended to allow the candidate to listen to victims and express solidarity with the community. The NDC said more than 270 people were reportedly killed in the recent violence in Yelwata.
According to the statement, Obi arrived in Benue at about 9 a.m. with plans to visit affected families.
He reportedly said his convoy was stopped by people chanting, “Peter Obi, go back.”
Obi said his purpose for visiting the community was humanitarian rather than political.
“I came to Benue not for politics but to mourn with our people, to listen to families who have lost loved ones, and to offer our solidarity,” he was quoted as saying.
The Obi Yelwata visit was therefore intended to provide support to residents affected by the killings, according to the party.
The NDC said Benue residents and Nigerians should be able to live peacefully, travel safely and cultivate their farms without fear.
The party called on the Benue State Government and relevant security agencies to investigate the reported incident.
It urged authorities to identify those responsible and ensure adequate protection for citizens and political leaders visiting communities affected by violence.
Although access to Yelwata was reportedly denied, the NDC said its thoughts and prayers remained with the victims, their families and the wider community.
The party also reaffirmed its commitment to advocating for the protection of lives and the safety of Nigerians across the country.
