Osun State Governor Ademola Adeleke has pledged to establish an independent commission of inquiry into reported political killings and violence recorded during the election period.
The governor made the commitment in a statement delivered by the Commissioner for Information and Public Enlightenment, Kolapo Alimi. Adeleke said the proposed commission would investigate the circumstances surrounding the incidents and ensure that anyone found responsible was brought to justice.
The governor also expressed sympathy to families who lost relatives during the period, stressing that political ambitions should never result in the loss of human lives. He said every victim was an Osun citizen, irrespective of political affiliation.
“Every life lost is an Osun life. Politics should never cost anyone his or her life, irrespective of political affiliation.”
Adeleke said the commission would be constituted on the Monday immediately following the election. According to him, the body would investigate reported killings and other acts of violence linked to the election period. He said its findings would form the basis for appropriate action against those responsible.
“The Commission will establish the circumstances surrounding these incidents and recommend appropriate actions to ensure that everyone responsible is brought to justice, regardless of political affiliation, position or influence.”
The governor maintained that no individual or group should be shielded from accountability because of political connections or influence.
He also disclosed plans to establish a support framework for families affected by the killings. According to Adeleke, the state government intends to provide assistance and compensation to families who lost their loved ones. He added that the victims’ memories would be appropriately honoured.
The governor urged residents to look beyond the immediate political contest and preserve the unity of the state. He said the election would eventually end, but Osun residents would continue to live together after the polls.
“The election will come and go, but we will remain one people. We owe the dead justice, their families compassion, and the people of Osun a peaceful future.”
Adeleke said the proposed inquiry was intended to provide accountability for victims and their families while helping the state move towards a more peaceful future.
