The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), University of Medical Sciences, Ondo (UNIMEDO), has commenced a total and indefinite strike over the alleged failure of the Ondo State Government to implement the 2025 Federal Government-ASUU agreement.
The union is also demanding payment of outstanding arrears dating back to January 1, 2026.
The decision followed a congress meeting held after the expiration of a 14-day ultimatum previously issued to the university management and Ondo State Government.
In a statement signed by the union’s Chairperson, Comrade Abraham O. Oladebeye, and Secretary, Comrade Adeniran O. Akinola, ASUU-UNIMEDO said its review of the situation showed that the agreement had yet to be implemented at the institution.
Following the congress decision, the union directed all members to withdraw from statutory academic responsibilities with effect from 11:25am on Thursday.
The directive effectively halted academic activities across the university.
The suspended activities include lectures, continuous assessment tests, examinations and seminars for undergraduate, conversion and postgraduate programmes.
The union also suspended participation in departmental, faculty, committee and Senate meetings, including meetings conducted virtually.
In addition, academic staff were directed to stop supervising students’ research projects, industrial training and fieldwork.
Other academic responsibilities covered by the directive have also been suspended.
ASUU-UNIMEDO said the industrial action would remain in place until the 2025 agreement was fully implemented at the university and all outstanding arrears from January 1, 2026, were paid.
The union described the action as total, comprehensive and indefinite, pending full implementation of the agreement and a subsequent directive from its National Executive Council (NEC).
The union expressed disappointment with the state government, saying the authorities had failed to resolve the issues despite the 14-day ultimatum.
ASUU-UNIMEDO also directed its Branch Executive Council to engage the public and media on the dispute.
A Branch Strike Coordinating Committee was equally activated to monitor compliance with the strike directive.
The development comes amid similar industrial action at other public universities in Ondo State.
ASUU chapters at Adekunle Ajasin University, Akungba-Akoko (AAUA), and Olusegun Agagu University of Science and Technology (OAUSTECH), Okitipupa, have also commenced indefinite strikes over the same concerns.
The simultaneous actions have further escalated the industrial dispute affecting public universities across the state.
With ASUU chapters at three institutions now on indefinite strike, academic activities in Ondo State’s public university system face significant disruption until the outstanding issues surrounding the 2025 agreement and accumulated arrears are resolved.
