The Minister of Defence, Gen. Christopher Gwabin Musa (retd.), has praised the transformation of Alaba International Market, describing it as a powerful example of Nigerian enterprise, innovation and economic resilience.
Musa made the remarks at the gala and award night marking the unveiling of the New Face of Alaba in Ikoyi, Lagos, where he celebrated the market’s emergence as one of Nigeria’s leading commercial hubs for electronics and technology.
The minister said the newly commissioned commercial complexes represented more than physical infrastructure, noting that they symbolised the vision, determination and collective effort of the Alaba business community. He congratulated the leadership of the International Market Association Electronics (IMAE), particularly its President-General, High Chief Dr. Camilus Nnamdi Amajuoyi, for driving the market’s transformation.
Musa also commended Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu for supporting the development of the commercial district. According to him, Alaba International Market has evolved beyond its traditional role as a marketplace to become a significant contributor to employment, technological innovation and Nigeria’s broader economic growth.
The defence minister reaffirmed the Federal Government’s commitment to providing a safe and enabling environment for businesses to thrive.
He also applauded President Bola Tinubu’s administration for prioritising national security and economic stability, stressing that sustainable development depends on strong collaboration between government, businesses and citizens. Musa encouraged traders, manufacturers and entrepreneurs within the Alaba community to continue promoting innovation, integrity and excellence in their operations.
He further highlighted ongoing efforts within the market to strengthen quality assurance, encourage locally manufactured products and combat counterfeit goods, describing the initiatives as essential to boosting consumer confidence.
Representing Governor Sanwo-Olu at the event, Deputy Governor Kadri Obafemi Hamzat praised Alaba International Market for its enduring contribution to Lagos State’s economy. Hamzat said the market remained a vital centre for commerce, innovation and job creation, while commending the resilience and entrepreneurial spirit of its traders.
He also reaffirmed the state government’s commitment to reconstructing the road linking Alaba International Market, saying the project would improve accessibility, ease commercial activities and stimulate further economic growth in the area.
The event also honoured individuals whose contributions have supported the growth and development of Alaba International Market over the years. According to a statement issued by the Ministry of Defence through its Public Relations Officer, Capt. Moses Yare, the IMAE has maintained a longstanding relationship with the Nigerian Army spanning several decades.
The statement noted that the relationship was strengthened by Gen. Musa during his early years as a military officer. Congratulating the Alaba business community on the milestone, the defence minister expressed optimism that the market would continue to expand its influence as a model of indigenous entrepreneurship and commercial excellence in Nigeria.
