The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has declared the candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Rabiu Shuaibu, as the winner of the Dawakin Kudu/Warawa Federal Constituency by-election conducted in Kano State. The result marks a significant victory for the APC in the constituency as voters elected a new representative to fill the vacant seat in the House of Representatives.
Announcing the outcome of the poll, Returning Officer Prof. Umar Sani confirmed that Shuaibu secured the highest number of valid votes cast during the election. According to the official results, the APC candidate polled 35,356 votes to defeat his closest rivals.
Lawal Garba-Haruna of the Allied Peoples Movement (APM) garnered 268 votes, while Labour Party candidate Abubakar Yahaya-Muhammad received 98 votes. The wide margin underscored APC’s dominance in the Kano by-election, with Shuaibu emerging as the clear choice of voters across the constituency.
While formally declaring the result, Prof. Sani stated that the election was conducted in accordance with electoral laws and that the APC candidate met all constitutional requirements for victory.
“The election was contested. That Rabiu Shuaibu of APC, having satisfied the requirements of the law, is hereby declared the winner and is returned elected,” he announced. The declaration was greeted with celebrations by APC supporters who gathered at various locations following the announcement of the final results.
The Kano by-election was organised to fill the vacancy created by the death of former lawmaker Muhammad Danjuma-Hassan, who represented the Dawakin Kudu/Warawa Federal Constituency before his passing.
The poll formed part of a series of by-elections conducted by INEC across several states to fill vacant legislative positions. Political observers noted that the election attracted attention because of its importance to party representation in the National Assembly and its potential implications for future political contests in Kano State.
With Shuaibu’s victory, the APC further strengthens its presence in the House of Representatives and consolidates its influence within the constituency.
The outcome is also expected to boost the party’s confidence ahead of future electoral contests, while providing residents of Dawakin Kudu and Warawa with a new representative to continue legislative duties on their behalf. As the newly elected lawmaker prepares to assume office, attention will now shift to how he intends to address the developmental needs and expectations of constituents across the federal constituency.
