Two residents trapped beneath the rubble of a collapsed one-storey building in Kubwa, Abuja, have been rescued alive and taken to hospital for treatment.
The incident occurred at Kubwa 2/2, near Yellow Page, at about 11:30am on Friday.
The victims were reportedly trapped on the ground floor of the residential property after the right section of the structure suddenly collapsed.
Head of Media and Public Relations at the Federal Capital Territory Emergency Management Department (FEMD), Nkechi Isa, confirmed the incident in a statement.
Isa said the emergency agency received a distress call at about 11:38am and immediately mobilised personnel to the scene.
According to her, emergency responders successfully extracted both trapped residents from the rubble.
The victims were subsequently taken to Kubwa General Hospital, where they were receiving medical attention and were reported to be in stable condition.
Isa said the affected property comprises six blocks of flats. She explained that most of the other occupants were away from the building when the collapse occurred.
Their absence, she noted, helped to prevent a larger number of people from being trapped in the incident.
Although no fatality was recorded, Isa said the collapse caused substantial damage to personal belongings and household items belonging to residents.
Following the incident, relevant government agencies moved to secure the affected area and investigate the circumstances surrounding the structural failure.
Isa said the Department of Development Control responded to the scene alongside the FCT Police Command.
The agencies are expected to examine the building and determine the factors responsible for the collapse.
The incident comes amid recurring concerns over building safety and structural integrity in parts of the Federal Capital Territory.
For the two rescued residents, however, the immediate priority remains medical care as authorities continue efforts to establish what caused the residential structure to fail.
