Presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress, NDC, Peter Obi has congratulated Osun State Governor Ademola Adeleke on his re-election. Obi said the outcome showed that the people of Osun had spoken clearly and courageously through the ballot.
The former Anambra State governor stated this in a message published on his X account on Sunday. In the statement titled “Osun: When the People Stand, Democracy Wins,” Obi said Adeleke had secured renewed confidence from voters and received another mandate to lead the state. He attributed the governor’s victory to what he described as his commitment to the people, concern for their needs and achievements in office.
Obi also singled out young people in Osun for commendation, saying their participation in the electoral process demonstrated the importance of citizens defending their votes.
He described the youths as courageous for peacefully protecting what they believed was their democratic mandate. According to him, the Osun election provided an important reminder that democracy becomes stronger when citizens remain vigilant and take their civic responsibilities seriously.
“The lesson from Osun is clear: democracy is strongest when citizens are alert, conscious of their civic responsibility, and determined to ensure that their votes count.”
Obi stressed that every legitimate vote should be respected and every lawful electoral mandate protected.
The NDC presidential candidate said the Osun experience should also serve as a lesson ahead of the 2027 general elections. He urged Nigerians to remain informed, participate actively in elections and ensure that their votes are protected.
Obi argued that Nigerians experiencing economic hardship, insecurity, deprivation and hunger also possess the democratic power to demand change through their votes. He therefore encouraged citizens to take greater ownership of the electoral process.
Obi also appealed to political actors to place the interests of Nigerians above partisan considerations. He called for peace, unity and respect for the rule of law, stressing that elections should not become contests characterised by violence. Instead, he said political parties and candidates should compete through ideas, competence, character and service.
Obi expressed hope that the Osun election would strengthen public confidence in Nigeria’s democratic system. He also urged Nigerians across the country to remain vigilant and committed to building a nation that is just, secure, prosperous and centred on the interests of its citizens.
