The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), Taraba State University (TSU) branch, has given the Taraba State Government 14 days to implement outstanding agreements or face industrial action. The union said the ultimatum followed a resolution reached by its congress and was intended to compel the relevant authorities to address unresolved issues affecting lecturers at the institution.
The branch Chairman, Dr Joshua Garba Mbave, announced the decision on Thursday. Mbave stressed that the 14-day notice was a demand for compliance with existing agreements and not an invitation to begin another round of negotiations.
In a statement issued to journalists, he called on the Taraba State Government, the university’s Governing Council and management to urgently resolve the outstanding matters. He warned that the patience demonstrated by lecturers should not be interpreted as acceptance of the situation.
According to him, the resolution was also informed by directives and decisions of ASUU’s National Executive Council concerning the continued non-implementation of relevant provisions of the ASUU-Federal Government 2025 Agreement. Mbave described the continued delay as unacceptable, arguing that agreements reached through recognised negotiation processes should be implemented within the agreed or reasonable timeframe.
“The Union considers the continued non-implementation of the Agreement unacceptable and fundamentally inconsistent with the principles of good-faith negotiation, collective bargaining, legitimate expectation, and established industrial relations practice,” he said.
The TSU ASUU chairman said the ultimatum commenced on August 13, 2026, and would expire on August 26, 2026. He said one of the union’s major demands was the immediate and full implementation of all applicable outstanding provisions of the 2025 agreement between ASUU and the Federal Government. The union is also demanding payment of all financial arrears owed to its members from January 2026 to date.
Mbave maintained that the outstanding financial obligations could no longer be left unresolved, stressing the need for the authorities to act within the period provided by the ultimatum. He urged the Taraba State Government and university authorities to use the 14-day window to address the union’s demands and prevent a disruption of academic activities.
The union warned that failure to comply with the demands before the expiration of the ultimatum could lead to industrial action at Taraba State University. The development places pressure on the state government and university management to resolve the outstanding issues before the deadline and prevent another disruption to academic activities at the institution.
