Leaders of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) have called for urgent resolution of internal divisions, warning that unresolved crises could affect the party’s prospects in the 2027 general elections.
The PDP has faced internal challenges in recent months, including leadership disputes and legal battles over party structure.
These issues have affected cohesion within the party and prompted calls for reconciliation among members.
Party leaders are now focusing on rebuilding unity ahead of the next electoral cycle, with efforts centred on restoring confidence and strengthening internal processes.
The situation comes as political parties across Nigeria begin early positioning ahead of the 2027 elections.
At the inauguration of the PDP 2026 National Convention Planning and Organising Committee in Abuja, party leaders emphasised the need for unity and reform.
Former Abia State Governor Okezie Ikpeazu, who chairs the committee, described the upcoming convention as a critical moment for the party’s future.
He said the event would test the party’s ability to overcome recent challenges and rebuild credibility.
“This convention is more than a gathering… a test of whether the Peoples Democratic Party can rise above its recent trials,” he said.
The PDP’s National Caretaker Working Committee Chairman, Abdulrahman Mohammed, also acknowledged the party’s recent difficulties but said efforts were ongoing to strengthen unity and direction.
Acting National Secretary Samuel Anyanwu appealed to former members who left during the crisis to return, stating that reconciliation remains central to the party’s strategy.
Party officials confirmed that the national convention is scheduled to hold on March 29 and 30, with a focus on electing a credible National Working Committee.
Leaders also referenced a Court of Appeal ruling affirming the caretaker committee, describing it as a basis for stability and renewed confidence within the party.
The call for unity reflects efforts by the PDP to reposition itself ahead of future elections. Internal cohesion and credible leadership structures are key factors that influence party performance in national polls.
The planned convention is expected to play a role in shaping the party’s leadership and strategy, with implications for its competitiveness in the 2027 elections.
For party members and supporters, the outcome of reconciliation efforts may affect participation and alignment within the political structure.
