President Bola Tinubu has said Nigeria’s economy has recovered, while improved coordination among security and intelligence agencies is producing better results in the fight against insecurity. The Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, disclosed this on Tuesday after leading the National Communications Team to a meeting with the President in Abuja.
The delegation comprised members of the Presidential Media Team and heads of key information agencies, including the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), Nigerian Television Authority (NTA), Voice of Nigeria (VON) and National Orientation Agency (NOA).
Idris said the meeting provided an opportunity to review public perceptions of government policies and discuss the administration’s communication strategy with the President.
According to the minister, Tinubu told the communication team that the economic reforms implemented by his administration were beginning to deliver measurable results. He said the President expressed confidence that the economy had moved beyond the difficult phase of adjustment and was now positioned for sustained growth.
“The president has told us several times the economy is turning the corner. We now know that the economy has turned the corner,” Idris said.
The minister explained that the engagement also enabled the communication team to present feedback from Nigerians and discuss ways of ensuring that government policies are better understood.
On security, Idris said Tinubu acknowledged that challenges remained in some parts of the country but maintained that operations were yielding better results. He attributed the improvement partly to closer cooperation between security and intelligence agencies.
“Government is strategising and working with the security agencies. You can see the better coordination this time around,” he said.
Idris said the President’s leadership and determination to restore peace had helped strengthen collaboration among agencies involved in national security operations. He added that the administration would continue engaging citizens to explain its policies while using public feedback to improve decision-making.
The minister also disclosed that Tinubu reaffirmed his commitment to press freedom during the meeting. However, the President urged journalists to balance that freedom with professional responsibility when reporting.
“The media will continue to have freedom to do their work. But freedom also has to come with responsibility,” Idris said.
Tinubu also called for stronger cooperation between government and the media in tackling the growing threats posed by fake news, misinformation and disinformation. According to Idris, the challenge has become more significant with the rapid expansion of artificial intelligence, which has made it easier for misleading content to spread.
The government, he said, would continue working with media organisations and information agencies to ensure Nigerians receive accurate and credible information about government policies and national developments.
