Governor of Abia State, Alex Otti, has described the naming of two newly acquired Boeing 737-800NG aircraft after literary icon Chinua Achebe and the Obi of Onitsha, Alfred Nnaemeka Achebe, as a powerful tribute to the enduring legacy of Igbo excellence in literature, leadership and national development.
The unveiling ceremony took place in Lagos during an event organised by United Nigeria Airlines to formally present the aircraft named in honour of the two distinguished figures. The gesture was widely framed as a celebration of intellectual achievement, cultural pride and visionary leadership associated with the Igbo nation.
Governor Otti commended the airline’s founder, Obiora Okonkwo, for immortalising two personalities whose contributions continue to inspire generations. He noted that Chinua Achebe, author of Things Fall Apart, remains a global literary figure whose works shaped African storytelling and identity. He also highlighted Obi Alfred Achebe as a respected traditional ruler and leader known for integrity, service and institutional excellence.
“For remembering to honour our people, you will be honoured,” Otti said. The aircraft naming was described as symbolic, reflecting the values both men represent in literature and traditional leadership.
Speaking at the event, United Nigeria Airlines founder Obiora Okonkwo said the decision to honour Achebe and the Obi of Onitsha was deliberate, aimed at celebrating icons whose influence transcends Nigeria.
He said Chinua Achebe remains a global ambassador of African literature, while Obi Alfred Achebe represents dignity, service and continuity in traditional leadership. The event attracted political leaders, business executives, traditional rulers and aviation stakeholders who gathered to celebrate both the honourees and Igbo enterprise.
Governor Otti also used the occasion to highlight progress on the proposed Abia Airport project, stating that construction had reached an advanced stage. He commended the Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo, for supporting aviation reforms and backing the initiative.
Minister Festus Keyamo noted that Governor Otti personally pushed for the upgrade of the proposed Abia airstrip into a full international airport. He assured continued federal support and said Abia State had demonstrated readiness to provide counterpart funding for the project. Keyamo also praised the governor’s commitment to aviation infrastructure development.
Obi Alfred Achebe expressed gratitude for the honour, describing it as deeply meaningful and reflective of his shared history with Chinua Achebe. Chairman of Air Peace, Allen Onyema, praised United Nigeria Airlines, saying the company is on track to becoming a leading carrier in West Africa. He also urged Nigerians to support indigenous businesses and commended Otti’s leadership.
Former Senate President Adolphus Wabara described the initiative as a strong statement on the resilience and global impact of the Igbo people. He encouraged Igbo professionals and entrepreneurs to remain confident in their identity and contributions to national development.
The event concluded with the official unveiling of the two Boeing 737-800NG aircraft amid applause from dignitaries and industry leaders. Stakeholders described the gesture as both symbolic and forward-looking, reinforcing themes of cultural pride, innovation and national development.
