Obasanjo Hosts Makinde, Fayemi, Oyinlola for Talks Ahead of 2027 Elections

Former President Olusegun Obasanjo on Sunday received a delegation of prominent political figures at his residence inside the Olusegun Obasanjo Presidential Library in Abeokuta, Ogun State, where discussions focused on national issues ahead of Nigeria’s 2027 general elections.

Among those who visited the elder statesman were Oyo State Governor and Allied Peoples Movement (APM) presidential candidate, Seyi Makinde, former Ekiti State Governor, Dr. Kayode Fayemi, and former Osun State Governor, Olagunsoye Oyinlola.

Governor Makinde disclosed details of the visit in a post shared on his official X account shortly after the meeting. According to him, the engagement centred on critical national matters and the future of the country as political activities gradually build towards the 2027 general elections.

“Earlier today, we visited Baba, His Excellency Chief Olusegun Obasanjo, GCFR, in Abeokuta. Our discussions centred on important national issues in view of the upcoming general election,” Makinde wrote.

While he did not disclose specific issues discussed during the closed-door meeting, the governor described the conversation as timely given the country’s evolving political landscape.

Makinde also expressed appreciation to the former president for sharing his experience and perspectives on issues affecting the nation. “We appreciate Baba for his wise counsel at this crucial time in our nation’s history,” he added.

Obasanjo, who has remained an influential voice in Nigeria’s political and governance discourse since leaving office, regularly receives political leaders, public office holders and elder statesmen for consultations on national development and democratic governance.

Although details of Sunday’s deliberations were not made public, the meeting comes as political parties and key stakeholders continue consultations and strategic engagements ahead of the 2027 elections.

The gathering of Governor Makinde, Fayemi and Oyinlola at the former president’s Abeokuta residence has further drawn attention to ongoing political consultations expected to shape conversations in the build-up to the next general election.
