The Lagos State Police Command has recorded significant gains in its ongoing security operations, arresting 243 suspects and recovering dozens of firearms between March and June 2026 as part of intensified efforts to combat crime across Nigeria’s commercial capital.
The achievements were disclosed on Monday by Commissioner of Police Tijani Fatai during the working visit of the South-West Coordinating Deputy Inspector-General of Police, Adegoke Fayoade, to the Command Headquarters in Ikeja.
Presenting a performance report since assuming office on March 26, 2026, Fatai said the successes were driven by intelligence-led operations, proactive policing strategies, and enhanced collaboration with security stakeholders. He noted that the command’s focus on prevention, surveillance, and rapid response has contributed to the state’s ongoing Lagos crime reduction strategy.
According to the commissioner, the command arrested 71 armed robbery suspects, 133 suspected cultists, 35 murder suspects, and four suspects linked to traffic robbery offences during the three-month period. The police also foiled 28 armed robbery operations and recovered 60 firearms alongside 625 rounds of ammunition from criminal elements operating within the state.
“Since my assumption of duty on March 26, 2026, the command has continued to record remarkable achievements by reducing the incidence of serious crimes such as cultism, armed robbery, kidnapping, civil unrest, violent protests and attacks on government facilities to the barest minimum,” Fatai said.
“Where intermittent cases of these crimes have occurred, they have been promptly investigated, with suspects arrested and prosecuted accordingly.”
The commissioner attributed the progress to the support of the Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Disu, the Lagos State Government, the Lagos State Security Trust Fund, and other partners supporting law enforcement activities.
Beyond crime-fighting operations, the command intensified enforcement against traffic violations across the metropolis.
Fatai revealed that 122 vehicles were impounded for driving against traffic regulations, while 1,058 motorcycles were seized for various offences. In addition, 1,541 vehicles were impounded for illegally using Bus Rapid Transit corridors. The figures reflect broader efforts to improve public safety, road discipline, and urban mobility in Africa’s largest city.
“With all hands on deck, coupled with the invaluable support of the Inspector-General of Police, the Lagos State Government and other stakeholders, the command has been able to fully implement various crime-prevention strategies, intelligence-driven operations and modern policing techniques,” he said.
“Consequently, major crimes, including armed robbery, kidnapping, murder, cultism and related offences, have recorded significant declines.”
Despite the positive results, Fatai disclosed that seven police personnel lost their lives while carrying out their duties during the review period. Three others sustained varying degrees of injuries.
“These achievements have not come without sacrifices from some of our gallant officers and men. Seven personnel lost their lives in the line of duty, while three others sustained injuries,” he said.
As authorities seek to sustain Lagos crime reduction efforts, the command has assured residents that intelligence-driven policing, crime prevention initiatives, and strategic enforcement operations will continue to protect lives, businesses, and property across the state.
