Terrorists operating in parts of Sokoto State have been forced from their positions after an offensive by Nigerian Army troops in Tangaza Local Government Area.
The operation was carried out by troops of the COAS Special Intervention Battalion 7, Sector 2, under Operation FANSAN YAMMA.
The Sokoto troops operation targeted suspected terrorist locations in the area.
Military sources said troops moved into several identified threat areas. The locations included Manu, Alkasim and Kandam villages.
The troops also advanced towards the Magarya forest axis. Intelligence had indicated the presence of armed terrorists there.
The operation escalated after soldiers encountered the terrorists inside the forest enclave.
The troops engaged the group with superior firepower. The pressure reportedly forced the terrorists to abandon their positions.
They subsequently fled deeper into the forest. Troops then launched an aggressive follow-up operation around the abandoned enclave.
A search of the area led to the recovery of several weapons. The items were believed to have been used by the terrorists.
Recovered equipment included a PKT machine gun and AK-47 rifles. Troops also found a large quantity of 7.62 x 54mm belted ammunition.
Several motorcycles and other logistical materials were equally recovered. According to the military source, the weapons recovery was significant.
The PKT machine gun could provide considerable firepower during attacks. Such weapons could also be used against security forces.
They could equally pose a threat to civilian communities. The recovered motorcycles were believed to aid terrorist mobility.
The vehicles could help the group navigate forest terrain. They could also facilitate movement through remote settlements.
The Sokoto troops operation is part of a wider offensive. The military is working to dismantle terrorist enclaves.
