The Enugu State Government has approved a fresh wave of infrastructure, housing and tourism projects aimed at accelerating development and supporting its long-term economic transformation agenda. The approvals were granted during the latest meeting of the State Executive Council (SEC), with officials stating that the projects align with the administration’s goal of expanding the state’s economy from $4 billion to $30 billion within eight years.
The development was announced by the Commissioner for Information and Communication, Dr. Malachy Agbo, alongside the Commissioners for Works and Infrastructure, Culture and Tourism, Agriculture and Agro-Industrialisation, Education, and Health during a briefing with Government House correspondents.
As part of the approved projects, the state government will complete and modernise the long-abandoned Wings C and D of the Enugu State Secretariat Complex in GRA while carrying out extensive rehabilitation of the existing Wings A and B.
Commissioner for Works and Infrastructure, Engr. Ben Osy Okoh, said Wings A and B were commissioned in 2015, while several sections of Wings C and D have remained unfinished and have deteriorated over the years.
According to him, the upgrade will completely remodel the secretariat with modern facilities while correcting structural and operational challenges identified in the older buildings.
Following the completion of the first phase of the 6.5-kilometre dual carriageway serving the New Enugu City, the Executive Council approved the construction of 1,000 fully detached terrace housing units, comprising four-bedroom and five-bedroom homes.
The government also approved plans for an additional 18,000 mass housing units at Gateway Estate to address rising housing demand and improve access to affordable accommodation. Authorities said the housing projects would include supporting infrastructure such as road networks, electricity supply, water systems and other essential public services.
The Executive Council also approved the immediate construction of the 10.5-kilometre Igogoro–Amachara–Ikpamodo–Okpo–Amaada Road, alongside additional road intervention projects in Nsukka.
The works include rehabilitation of major flash-flood locations, repairs to damaged drainage infrastructure, evacuation of blocked drainage channels and the construction of five adjoining streets to improve traffic movement and reduce flooding. To strengthen maintenance capacity, the state government equally approved the procurement of more than 30 pieces of light construction equipment for the Ministry of Works to support direct labour operations and emergency intervention projects.
The Executive Council approved several flagship tourism developments designed to position Enugu as a leading destination for leisure and eco-tourism. Among the projects is the Ovu Lake Golf Resort in Akpawfu, Nkanu East Local Government Area, which will feature an 18-hole championship golf course, a luxury hotel with over 100 guest rooms, a 600-seat conference centre, boat regatta facilities, landscaped gardens, clubhouses, children’s recreation areas and multiple sporting facilities.
The government also approved the Attakwu Tourism Development Project, where a natural forest and lake will be transformed into an eco-tourism destination featuring an animal sanctuary and other nature-based attractions. Similarly, the Akwuke Tourism Development Project will include a modern sand beach, water park, theme park, scenic boardwalk and recreational facilities designed to attract families and tourists.
One of the administration’s signature tourism initiatives is the Okpatu–Awhum Cable Car Project, expected to connect the Cross of Hope on Okpatu Hill with the popular Awhum Waterfall over a distance of approximately 5.32 kilometres. Commissioner for Culture and Tourism, Dame Ugochi Madueke, said the cable car system will feature three stations located at the Cross of Hope, the Awhum Monastery and the Awhum Waterfall.
The project will also include complementary attractions such as an experience centre, food court and visitor rotunda, providing tourists with a scenic alternative to climbing the hills on foot while enhancing the state’s tourism appeal. State officials expressed confidence that the combination of improved infrastructure, expanded housing and world-class tourism investments will stimulate economic activity, create jobs and strengthen Enugu’s position as a major investment and tourism destination in Nigeria.
