Vice President Kashim Shettima has departed Abuja for Freetown, Sierra Leone, to represent President Bola Tinubu at the 69th Ordinary Session of the Authority of Heads of State and Government of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS).
According to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), the high-level regional gathering will be held on Sunday, July 19, at the Julius Maada Bio International Conference Centre in Freetown, bringing together heads of state, ministers, senior government officials and regional institutions from across West Africa.
Shettima is expected to participate in discussions alongside political and business leaders from the sub-region as ECOWAS member states deliberate on issues affecting regional stability, governance and economic cooperation.
The ECOWAS Leaders’ Summit will focus on adopting key policy decisions and strategic resolutions aimed at strengthening peace, democratic governance, economic growth and regional integration among member countries.
Leaders are also expected to review progress on shared priorities, including regional security, trade expansion, sustainable development and deeper economic integration within the West African bloc. The summit provides another opportunity for member states to reinforce collective efforts toward addressing common challenges through coordinated regional action and stronger institutional cooperation.
Representing President Tinubu, Shettima’s participation underscores Nigeria’s continued engagement in ECOWAS initiatives designed to promote stability, prosperity and closer collaboration across the region. The Vice President is expected to return to Abuja after concluding his official engagements in Sierra Leone.
