NAF airstrike destroys terrorist enclaves in Tumbuns and Mandara Mountains

The Nigerian Air Force has carried out a successful NAF airstrike that destroyed terrorist enclaves in Tumbuns and the Mandara Mountains in the North-East. The NAF airstrike formed part of sustained military operations under Operation Hadin Kai targeting insurgent strongholds. Authorities confirmed that the NAF airstrike was executed based on intelligence-led surveillance to disrupt terrorist movement and logistics in the affected areas.

The North-East region remains a major operational theatre for Nigeria’s counter-insurgency campaign against Boko Haram and Islamic State West Africa Province fighters. Over the years, terrorists have exploited difficult terrains such as the Lake Chad Basin and the Mandara Mountains to establish hidden bases.

The Tumbuns area, located within the Lake Chad region, consists of islands and waterways that provide natural cover for insurgent activities. The Mandara Mountains along the Nigeria–Cameroon border also serve as a strategic hideout due to rugged terrain and limited ground access. The Nigerian Air Force has increased its aerial operations in recent months, focusing on intelligence-driven missions to identify and neutralise terrorist infrastructure.

According to the Air Force, the latest NAF airstrike targeted fortified terrorist positions in Tumbuns and surrounding Mandara Mountain locations. The operation involved precision air interdiction based on confirmed intelligence reports.

Air Commodore Ehimen Ejodame, Director of Public Relations and Information, stated that the strikes hit key insurgent camps used for coordination, logistics, and shelter. He explained that surveillance confirmed active terrorist presence before the mission was executed. The operation reportedly destroyed structures, storage facilities, and defensive positions used by insurgents. Military sources noted that the airstrike significantly disrupted their operational capability in the affected zones.

The Air Force confirmed that the mission was part of continuous efforts to prevent terrorists from regrouping in remote and difficult terrains. Chief of the Air Staff Air Marshal Sunday Kelvin Aneke reiterated that air operations will continue across identified hotspots. He emphasised sustained pressure on insurgent networks as a core operational strategy.

The latest NAF airstrike strengthens ongoing military pressure on insurgent groups operating in Nigeria’s North-East. It also demonstrates continued reliance on air power to target remote and fortified terrorist locations. For local communities, the destruction of enclaves may reduce immediate threats of attacks, kidnappings, and movement of armed groups. However, experts note that long-term stability requires sustained ground and air coordination.

For the military, the operation highlights improved intelligence gathering and precision targeting capabilities. It also reinforces the strategic importance of air operations in inaccessible terrains. At a broader level, continued strikes in Tumbuns and the Mandara Mountains remain critical to weakening cross-border insurgent networks operating between Nigeria and neighbouring countries.
