Oshiomhole wins Edo APC senatorial primary unopposed ahead of 2027

Former Edo State governor and serving senator, Adams Oshiomhole, has emerged unopposed in the Edo North APC senatorial primary ahead of the 2027 general elections. The outcome of the primary confirmed Oshiomhole as the party’s candidate for another Senate contest representing Edo North. Party officials described the APC senatorial primary process in Edo North as peaceful and orderly during the statewide exercise.

Adams Oshiomhole currently represents Edo North Senatorial District in the National Assembly under the platform of the All Progressives Congress. Before joining the Senate in 2023, he served as governor of Edo State and later became National Chairman of the APC.

The APC has commenced nationwide primaries as part of preparations for the 2027 elections. These exercises cover Senate, House of Representatives, governorship, and presidential positions across Nigeria.

Edo State remains politically significant within the South-South region, particularly after recent governorship contests and ongoing party restructuring efforts. Political stakeholders in the state have intensified consultations ahead of the next election cycle.

Reports from the Edo APC primaries showed that Oshiomhole secured the Edo North ticket without opposition. The exercise reportedly recorded no competing aspirant against the former governor in the senatorial district. Senator Joe Ikpea also emerged unopposed for Edo Central during the same exercise. Meanwhile, the Edo South contest recorded active competition involving Omoregie Ogbeide-Ihama, Senator Neda Imasuen, and Pastor Osagie Ize-Iyamu.

According to the chairman of the APC National Assembly Primary Election Committee in Edo State, Muhammed Ajana, collation processes were conducted across the affected local government areas before final declarations were made.

The Edo North Senatorial District covers six local government areas, including Akoko Edo, Etsako West, Etsako East, Etsako Central, Owan East, and Owan West. Oshiomhole won the seat during the 2023 elections after defeating then-incumbent senator Francis Alimikhena.

Days before the primary, Oshiomhole had publicly stated that his immediate political focus was securing re-election to the Senate. He dismissed speculation surrounding possible Senate leadership ambitions beyond retaining his seat.

The outcome of the APC senatorial primary strengthens Oshiomhole’s position within Edo politics ahead of the 2027 elections. His unopposed emergence also reflects strong support within the Edo North APC structure. For the APC, retaining experienced political figures may support continuity and electoral coordination within the South-South region. The party is also seeking to strengthen its influence across Edo State following recent political realignments.

For voters in Edo North, the development signals an early start to political mobilisation ahead of the general elections. Opposition parties are also expected to intensify preparations in response to APC’s candidate lineup. Political observers believe the district could witness increased focus on infrastructure, representation, and economic development during the campaign period.
