Traffic Disruption as Truck Overturns on Otedola Bridge in Lagos

A heavily loaded truck overturned on Otedola Bridge along the Lagos–Ibadan Expressway on Wednesday morning, causing major traffic congestion and prompting authorities to advise motorists to use alternative routes.

Otedola Bridge is a critical transport link on the Lagos–Ibadan Expressway, which connects Lagos with key economic and urban centres in southwestern Nigeria.

Traffic flow on this road affects commuters, commercial transporters and the movement of goods between Lagos and other states.

Traffic disruptions on this corridor often have immediate effects on travel times and logistics operations.

Officials of the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) said the incident occurred at about 7:00 a.m., affecting motorists heading inward toward Lagos.

According to the traffic authority, the truck was carrying two 20-foot containers when it overturned. The overturned vehicle blocked approximately 90 per cent of the roadway, leaving only one lane open for other motorists.

LASTMA deployed officers to manage the scene and assist motorists stranded in the congestion. A recovery vehicle was dispatched to remove the overturned truck and clear the blocked sections of the highway.

Motorists and road users were advised to consider alternative routes while the obstruction was being cleared.

The incident has slowed traffic flow on one of Nigeria’s busiest intercity routes, where heavy-duty trucks and commercial vehicles are common.

Prolonged gridlock could lead to delays in the delivery of goods and increase transport costs for carriers, especially during peak hours of the work week.

Urban commuters and logistics operators may face extended travel times as congestion builds back toward major junctions such as Berger and Ojodu.

Road users were urged to plan journeys in advance, allow extra time for trips, and avoid the affected section until the road is fully cleared.

Such disruptions can also affect businesses that rely on timely deliveries, including retail supply chains, manufacturing inputs and perishable goods distribution. Prolonged delays could ripple into increased operational costs for these sectors.
