SSANU agreement negotiations reached a significant milestone on Monday as the Federal Government and the Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU) formally signed the long-awaited renegotiated 2009 agreement, bringing an end to years of engagement between both parties. The agreement was signed at the National Universities Commission (NUC) headquarters in Abuja, marking what the union described as the conclusion of an important phase of dialogue with the Federal Government.
The SSANU agreement was signed on behalf of the union by its National President, Comrade Mohammed Haruna Ibrahim, while Mahmud Yayale Ahmed signed on behalf of the Federal Government. Following the signing ceremony, Ibrahim described the development as a historic achievement for the union after years of sustained negotiations and advocacy.
“Today, 29th June, 2026, marks a historic and significant milestone in the struggle of the Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU), as the 2026 FGN/SSANU Agreement was successfully signed and sealed at the National Universities Commission (NUC), Abuja,” he said.
According to him, the agreement represents the outcome of years of dialogue, strategic engagement, responsible unionism and the collective commitment of SSANU members nationwide.
Ibrahim said the newly signed agreement advances the union’s longstanding demands for better working conditions and improved welfare for senior non-teaching staff in Nigerian universities.
He noted that the provisions cover issues including improved conditions of service, fair remuneration, salary review, CONTA adjustment and greater recognition of the contributions of non-teaching staff to the university system. The union described the signing as an important step toward strengthening the welfare and professional standing of senior university employees across the country.
While welcoming the agreement, Ibrahim stressed that attention must now shift from negotiations to implementation. He called on the Federal Government to begin executing the provisions of the SSANU agreement without unnecessary delays or discrimination.
“While this is a moment of joy and appreciation, it is also a moment of renewed responsibility. The struggle now moves from negotiation to full implementation,” he said.
He urged members of the union to remain united, disciplined and vigilant to ensure that every aspect of the agreement is faithfully implemented.
According to the SSANU president, the signing represents a victory for dialogue, perseverance and organised labour, but he maintained that the ultimate success of the agreement will be measured by its full and timely implementation across Nigeria’s public university system.
