Operation Clean Sweep Targets Terrorist Hideouts in Katsina Communities

Operation Clean Sweep is underway in Katsina State as troops of Operation Fansan Yamma intensify efforts to dismantle terrorist and bandit networks operating in Matazu Local Government Area and surrounding communities.

The military offensive, codenamed Operation Clean Sweep III, was launched following the reported abduction and subsequent death of retired Major General Rabe Abubakar. Military authorities say the operation is designed to track those responsible, disrupt criminal activities, and improve security across affected areas.

Details of the operation were disclosed in a statement issued by the Media Information Officer of Operation Fansan Yamma, Lieutenant Colonel Aliyu Danja. According to him, the exercise began on June 14, 2026, and has involved a combination of fighting patrols, intelligence-driven raids, cordon-and-search operations, and clearance missions.

The operation forms part of broader security efforts aimed at denying criminal groups freedom of movement within the Joint Operations Area. Security officials believe sustained military pressure will weaken terrorist networks and reduce attacks on local communities.

Danja said troops have already recorded notable progress during Operation Clean Sweep, particularly around the Dikkawa Hills and neighbouring settlements identified as potential criminal strongholds.

He explained that military units carried out extensive clearance operations in Adua, Nasarawa, and Karaduwa communities, where several locations suspected of serving as hideouts for criminal elements were searched and cleared.

During the operations, troops reportedly discovered and destroyed structures believed to be used by terrorist groups for logistics, planning, and operational support. Military authorities said dismantling these facilities would significantly reduce the capacity of criminal groups to coordinate attacks and sustain their activities.

The offensive is being conducted in collaboration with other security agencies and local stakeholders. According to military officials, this coordinated approach is intended to improve intelligence gathering and strengthen overall security across Katsina State.

The latest operation comes amid ongoing concerns over insecurity in parts of northwestern Nigeria, where banditry, kidnappings, and attacks on communities have remained persistent challenges. Security agencies have increasingly relied on intelligence-led operations to target criminal enclaves and disrupt their supply networks.

Military authorities said Operation Clean Sweep would remain active until key objectives are achieved. These include neutralising criminal threats, destroying operational bases, and restoring confidence among residents living in vulnerable communities.

The Theatre Command of Joint Task Force Operation Fansan Yamma assured residents of Matazu and adjoining areas that protecting lives and property remains a top priority. Officials reiterated their commitment to preventing criminal groups from establishing safe havens within the region.

Residents were also encouraged to continue supporting security operations through the provision of credible and timely information. Authorities assured the public that all intelligence shared with security agencies would be treated confidentially.

For communities affected by insecurity, the operation represents a renewed effort to restore stability and strengthen local safety. Security analysts note that sustained cooperation between residents and security agencies could play a significant role in achieving long-term success.

Military authorities said further updates would be provided as Operation Clean Sweep progresses across the affected areas.
