Budget extension bill discussions are set to dominate proceedings in the House of Representatives as lawmakers convene an emergency sitting to consider legislation extending the implementation period of the 2025 capital budget.
The emergency session has been scheduled for Monday, June 15, 2026, at 11:00 a.m. at the National Assembly complex. The notice was contained in a letter dated June 11, 2026, and signed by the Acting Clerk of the House, Ibrahim Sidi.
According to the notice, the budget extension bill seeks to amend existing appropriation laws to allow Ministries, Departments and Agencies more time to complete ongoing capital projects. The proposal specifically targets the extension of the capital component of the 2025 budget.
The document stated that the purpose of the sitting is to consider the “Appropriation (REPEAL and Enactment) Act, 2025 (Amendment) (No. 2) Bill, 2026,” which would extend capital budget implementation from June 30, 2026, to September 30, 2026.
Lawmakers were formally notified to prioritise attendance at the emergency sitting. The notice emphasised urgency, stating: “All Honourable Members are required to take note and accord the Sitting priority attendance, please.”
The budget extension bill is designed to address delays in capital project execution across federal Ministries, Departments and Agencies. It aims to ensure that allocated funds are fully utilised for infrastructure development and other key national projects.
If the bill is passed by both chambers of the National Assembly and signed into law by President Bola Tinubu, it will officially extend the lifespan of the capital component of the 2025 budget by an additional three months.
Legislative sources indicate that the extension is intended to improve budget performance and reduce the frequency of abandoned or incomplete federal projects. Many MDAs have reportedly struggled to meet execution timelines due to procurement delays and funding release schedules.
