Troops of the Nigerian Army have dislodged terrorists from an enclave in Tangaza Local Government Area of Sokoto State.
The operation was conducted by the COAS Special Intervention Battalion 7, Sector 2, under Operation FANSAN YAMMA.
The Sokoto troops operation formed part of ongoing efforts to dismantle terrorist hideouts across the North-West.
Military sources said the troops advanced into areas identified as terrorist threat zones. The locations included Manu, Alkasim and Kandam villages.
They also moved through the Magarya forest axis.
The operation followed intelligence on terrorist activities in the area. According to the sources, troops encountered terrorists inside the Magarya forest enclave.
A firefight reportedly followed the encounter.
The terrorists eventually abandoned their position and fled deeper into the forest. Troops subsequently launched a follow-up operation around the area.
During searches of the surrounding locations, soldiers recovered weapons and other materials believed to belong to the terrorists.
The recovered items included a PKT machine gun and AK-47 rifles.
Troops also recovered a large quantity of 7.62 x 54mm belted ammunition. Several motorcycles and assorted logistical materials were also found.
The military said the recovery would reduce the terrorists’ operational capacity.
The motorcycles were believed to support movement through difficult terrain. They could also facilitate access to remote settlements.
The Sokoto troops operation is part of broader military efforts. These operations seek to deny armed groups freedom of movement.
They also aim to prevent attacks and abductions in vulnerable communities. Troops have reportedly maintained sustained patrols around the affected areas.
Follow-up operations are also being conducted to prevent regrouping. The military authorities warned terrorists and their collaborators operating in the area.
They urged them to abandon their activities and surrender. The authorities stressed that troops would continue pursuing armed groups.
They also pledged to dismantle their operational networks. Meanwhile, residents were assured of continued military protection.
The troops reaffirmed their commitment to protecting lives and property. They also said efforts would continue to restore confidence among affected communities.
