Fresh conversations around the Oyo 2027 succession race intensified after Governor Seyi Makinde’s media aide dismissed reports claiming the governor had endorsed a preferred governorship successor. The clarification followed widespread social media claims linking former commissioner Bimbo Adekanmbi to an alleged endorsement. The Oyo State Government said consultations remain ongoing and no official decision has been made regarding the 2027 governorship contest.
The Oyo 2027 succession conversation has continued gaining momentum as political actors reposition ahead of the next governorship election. Governor Seyi Makinde, currently serving his second term, will not be eligible to seek re-election in 2027 under constitutional limits.
This has increased interest in potential successors within the Peoples Democratic Party and opposition platforms. Political discussions in the state have increasingly focused on continuity, infrastructure delivery, and party influence ahead of the transition period.
Oyo remains one of Nigeria’s most politically competitive states. Governorship contests in the state often attract strong regional and party alignments, making succession conversations strategically important long before party primaries begin. Recent political developments across Nigeria have also intensified succession calculations within major parties. Internal consultations and alliance-building have become more visible as 2027 approaches.
Dr Suleimon Olanrewaju, Special Adviser on Media to Governor Makinde, denied reports that the governor had selected any preferred candidate for 2027. He described the social media claims as false and premature. According to him, Governor Makinde is still consulting widely with stakeholders across the state. He stated that any official position would be communicated publicly at the appropriate time.
The clarification followed widespread online reports alleging that Makinde had chosen Bimbo Adekanmbi as his successor. Adekanmbi previously served as Commissioner for Finance during the administration of late former governor Abiola Ajimobi.
Adekanmbi has remained active in public policy and development projects within Oyo State. In 2025, he was appointed chairman of the committee overseeing the upgrade of the Ibadan Airport project, one of the state government’s flagship infrastructure initiatives.
The governor’s aide maintained that the administration remains focused on governance rather than political endorsements. He stressed that consultations would continue before any succession decision emerges. The development comes amid increasing political movements within Oyo State. Both ruling and opposition parties have intensified internal discussions ahead of future primaries and coalition arrangements.
The Oyo 2027 succession debate highlights growing political activity within one of Nigeria’s key states. Early endorsement rumours may influence alignments within party structures and stakeholder groups. For political actors, the absence of an official successor keeps the field open for consultations and strategic positioning. It also allows the ruling party to manage internal expectations ahead of formal campaigns.
For governance, prolonged succession speculation may shape policy narratives and political alliances over the next year. Public perception around continuity and leadership transition could also influence party stability. For voters and observers, the situation reflects how political transition conversations increasingly begin long before election cycles formally commence.
