FG Welcomes Suspension of Oyo Teachers Strike, Praises Dialogue

The Federal Government has welcomed the suspension of the Oyo teachers strike, describing the development as a major victory for dialogue and a significant step towards restoring uninterrupted learning for thousands of pupils across Oyo State.

The resolution followed negotiations involving the Federal Ministry of Education, the Oyo State Government and the leadership of the Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT) at the national, zonal and state levels. The agreement has cleared the way for teachers to return to classrooms after the industrial action.

Minister of Education, Dr. Tunji Alausa, announced the breakthrough and said the successful outcome reflected the commitment of all parties to place the future of Nigerian children above every other interest.

“I am glad to report today that the strike has been suspended. Teachers are now returning to school to educate their students. This is the result of our collaboration and coordination with the leadership of the National Union of Teachers and the Government of Oyo State,” Alausa said. He praised Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde for resolving the dispute through dialogue, describing his approach as an example of constructive leadership.

The minister also commended the National President of the Nigeria Union of Teachers, Comrade Audu Titus Amba, the NUT Zonal President, Comrade Hassan Ajibola Fatai, the Oyo State leadership of the union and members of its executive committee for prioritising the interests of schoolchildren during negotiations.

Beyond resolving the Oyo teachers strike, Alausa reiterated the Federal Government’s commitment to ensuring that insecurity does not prevent children from accessing education. He said the administration of President Bola Tinubu remains determined to protect schools and ensure that academic activities continue despite security challenges.

“Our children will remain in school, and we will continue to educate them. We will not succumb to terror. This administration remains resolute in confronting insecurity with every available resource and ensuring that our schools continue to serve as safe places for teaching and learning,” the minister stated.

The minister paid tribute to teachers nationwide, describing them as patriotic nation-builders whose dedication continues to support Nigeria’s education system despite existing challenges.

The Federal Ministry of Education also reaffirmed its commitment to strengthening collaboration with state governments, teachers’ unions, security agencies and other stakeholders to improve school safety, maintain industrial harmony and guarantee uninterrupted access to quality education.

The ministry said the suspension of the Oyo teachers strike reinforces the importance of dialogue in resolving labour disputes and sustaining learning across the country. As schools reopen, the Federal Government said it will continue working with relevant stakeholders to ensure that every Nigerian child has access to safe, stable and quality education in line with the Renewed Hope Agenda.
